After a lengthy hiatus with regard to his musical output, North West London UK Rap veteran Bashy returns with brand new project 'Being Poor Is Expensive'.
Following the official release of his prior projects 'Chupa Chups' and 'Catch Me If You Can', at the top of the year, previously never made available digitally despite being released in the mid to late 2000’s respectively; the now prolific actor, Ashley Thomas, known musically as Bashy announced his new album 'Being Poor Is Expensive' back in April of this year.
It's finally here, and for those that have been anticipating the project, it seems to have lived up to expectations from the instant feedback to the drop, as the lyricist skilfully breaks down what it was like to live and grow up in North West London in the early 90's, masterfully incorporating subtle references, phrases and locations synonymous with the infamous corner of London we don’t seem to hear about quite as much as the others.
The relatable stories offloaded throughout the duration of this project paint vivid pictures from the perspective of a young boy who grew up in an admittedly stereotypically Caribbean two parent household but still faced trials and tribulations when he stepped outside of his house, into the deprived borough of Brent as the happenings in his environment began to take influence.
The 11 track album sees Bashy very intentionally incorporate his Caribbean herratige into a majority of the songs whether via the instrumental or his vocal performance as he detailed the ups and downs of his turbulent journey to success, while simultaneously hitting us with high level raps, displaying Bashy’s growth in his 10-year absence form music in both his technical ability and lyricism, featuring numerous multi syllable rhyming scenes, double entendres, complex wordplay and countless dynamic flows. Also being very sure to recruit 3 carefully selected features to add a little more flavour to the pot.
Before Bashy delivered this project he also decided to sit down with North West's own Tazer Black and Marvin Abbey in a lengthy 3 Shots Of Taquilla episode
Bashy also stepped up for a very cold, debut Daily Duppy freestyle prior to the release of the project of which is track 9 on the album, titled 'Sticky'.
The veteran rapper also dropped off the music video to Blessed, featuring CSB rapper Skrapz and WSTRN's super vocalist Haile.
Bashy also managed to drop off a 3 part sit down with Posty, Kano, ENNY, Reni Eddo-Lodge and a studio audience titled The Reasoning, which saw the quartet of creatives delve deeper into the lyrics, concepts and themes of the album and how they all relate to it.
The album is out now and avaialble to buy and stream via all major digital outlets including Apple Music and Spotify.
