Big Vali talks his most recent drop 'Pick Up The Phone', his EP 'Love or Money?' and more in the latest insta;llement of 'Listen Up'.
Your latest release 'Pick Up The Phone' dropped not too long ago, what was the inspiration behind the track?
The inspiration behind ‘Pick Up The Phone’ was purely just a vibe I was feeling that day - I felt like making a R&B, love type song to express my feelings. Now every time I listen to it, it hypes me up and I’m like "yeah...no girl in future will risk not picking up the phone to me!"
What's your studio process? Do you start with the beat and write to it or vice versa?
My studio process always starts with the beat first - I have to get into the mood of the beat and feel it in different ways to suit the writing. To be honest, this song was written in the car while I was driving on the M23.
Can you recall a time when you felt really inspired to try new sounds?
Usually when I’m feeling some type of way, I always gravitate towards new sounds. I try to push myself out of my comfort zone as much as possible. For example, if you listen to my EP, you’ll understand what I mean about being "completely out of my comfort zone".
Your EP 'Love or Money?' definitely showcases your musical diversity - do you have a favourite track?
My favourite track from the project has to be ‘Don’t Play With Me’ - it showcases so many of the emotions I was experiencing in my life at that stage. It expresses all of my feelings within one whole song and takes you through the journey of me being stuck between making money or choosing love.
Can we expect any more collabs from you in the future?
You can expect everything and anything from me! I'm sitting on so much unreleased music. I have a lot of open verse tracks, so I'll have a fair few features coming very soon...
How do you feel about the UK music scene right now?
I feel like the UK music scene is missing something right now - all I’m hearing is sampled music and not enough originality. I feel like a lot of artists are cutting corners in order to get to the bag quicker, which I do respect in a way, but I feel like some certain artists should come out of their comfort zone and try something new.
What's the most valuable piece of advice someone has given you on your music journey?
Stay humble no matter what happens in your career and don’t be taken for a fool by anyone. This is your journey so you get to decide how it goes.
Is there anyone who you look up to within the music space?
Right now not really, but I do have a lot of favourite artists who I listen to on a daily basis. I get inspired by a lot of different styles of music so I’m always open to new artists anf genres.
