After a two year absence, The MOBO awards is returning on 12 November 2020 at SSE Arena in Wembley. The announcement coincided with the news that Brent will be the London Borough of Culture 2020. Kanya King, founder and CEO of MOBO, grew up in Brent and had this to say:
“We felt empowered to bring MOBO back to Brent to coincide with the borough’s Year of Culture because this is where our fight to challenge the status quo to create a level playing field started."
Many artists originate from Brent, so it will be interesting to see how heavily they are featured.
While there hasn't been a show since 2017, the MOBO has a long history, with performances from everyone from Stormzy, Fekky and Krept and Konan to Jay-Z, Beyonce; and in 2000 Sade came out of retirement for her first performance in over a decade.
Kanya promises that the show will be memorable:
"We are returning with even more determination and energy to support and boost our culture wherever we can. 2020 will see many positive changes that will impact more and more talented young people – very proud to be back and to help ensure that the younger generation will also dare to dream.”
