Mental health has always been an important topic but it’s even more needed in 2020, a year that has forced many of us to adapt in new ways. While many serious issues have come to light this year, mental health takes the star of the show in Munya Chawawa’s new series Deep Issue Massage. Across the lockdown period and beyond Chawawa kept us entertained with covers and skits of several artists, from Craig David to his most notable performance as Unknown P, a posh driller. The act is a play of prominent drill artist Unknown T, who has also featured on his channel.

Deep Issue Massage keeps the same humour but gets onto a more serious topic. It’s a clever play on words also, as he and his guests talk about mental health whilst getting deep tissue massages. For episode one he is joined by popular stand-up comedian Kae Kurd. They discuss his upbringing, and how growing up as the eldest son in an immigrant family has impacted him. The two trade self-care tips also, which is especially helpful as self-care for men isn’t usually discussed.

Chawawa’s own story also reminds us not to compare our lives to what we see online. Although 2020 has been one of his most successful years yet he discusses how his own mental health has been affected this year. The show is especially important not only because it starts with two men having a brotherly chat about mental health but because Chawawa’s excellent sense of humour shows that it doesn’t have to be as daunting as it seems to open up. ‘A problem shared is a problem halved’ Kurd reaffirms.
