During the 7pm message to the nation, Boris Johnson announced a new COVID alert system run by a biosecurity centre. He said: “We’ve been through the initial peak.”
However, he added: “This is not the time simply to end the lockdown this week.” We are now able to go for unlimited exercise with members of our households. The system has five levels and indicates when restrictions should be eased.
By the earliest of June 1st, there could be a phased reopening of some cafes and schools. Some pubs and cinemas may also open July 1st. Those who are unable to work from home, such as construction workers, are urged to “avoid public transport where at all possible.”
Mr Johnson said: “We will come back from this devilish illness.” One Twitter user described tonight’s announcement as “a rough sketch of an outline of a plan.”
