On the 13th of September, transgender model Munroe Bergdorf announced via her Instagram page that she was going to be one of the faces of the next Illamasqua campaign. This comes shortly after the controversy of L’Oreal firing her.

Following the rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in early August, where an anti racist protester was killed by a white supremacist, Munroe, 29, wrote a Facebook post in response to the event. When speaking about the post (that is now deleted) Bergdorf said “It was an epic three-parter about how racism is a social structure and how, if this is the case, what can you do to combat racism?” She also wrote on the post “Most of ya’ll don’t even realise or refuse to acknowledge that your existence, privilege and success as a race is built on the backs, blood and death of people of colour, your entire existence is drenched in racism.”

This then caused L’Oreal to release a statement saying that they “believe that the recent comments by Munroe Bergdorf are at odds with those values, and as such we have taken the decision to end the partnership with her.”

L’Oreal’s decision to let Bergdorf go evoked a lot of outrage from people who stood by her and what she had said, including the cosmetics brand Illamasqua. At the time of the firing, they released a statement which said ‘As a longstanding Illamasqua collaborator, we are angered to hear that Munroe Bergdorf has been dropped from the L’Oreal True Match Campaign. Illamasqua is a brand that stands proudly and unashamedly for diversity and equality. We don’t stand or accept any form of racism, but we also believe Munroe’s comments have been edited out of context by a certain media title (who we won’t bother naming) without telling a true story.’

I personally think it is excellent news that she will now be fronting a new cosmetics campaign for Illamasqua.
