Love Island will refrain an on-air tribute to late star Mike Thalassitis when its 2019 series launches. Mike was a cast member on the ITV2 reality competition back in 2017, and died this past March in between series of the hit show.

Love Island bosses allegedly don’t plan to directly address Thalassitis’s passing when they launch series 5 but there will be a tribute to Thalassitis on the ITV Hub’s upcoming box set of Love Island series 3 — which comprises the episodes actually featuring him.

Meanwhile, his death sparked some talks about duty of care that reality shows have for their stars, with former Love Islanders Malin Andersson and Jonny Mitchell among those calling on the show to do more to support its cast.

In response, Love Island bosses announced publicly that they had already undertaken an extensive review of their aftercare procedures in order to roll out major changes for all future stars of the show.

Cast members will now have access to financial and social media training, in addition to mental health counselling before, during and after their time in the Love Island villa.

Love Island is said to return to ITV2 for its 2019 series in the coming weeks.
