Event Review: JUMPOFF UK – May 3, ROUND 9 [@JUMPOFFTVUK]

The night opened up with Radio 1 DJ Charlie Sloth on the decks doing what he does best – spinning them juicy songs to warm up the stiff yet civil crowd. It wasn’t until a few of the Jump Off crew members took to the floor that the crowd loosened. They exchanged opinions about Tulisa and her being labelled FHM Magazines sexiest woman in the world.

The banter sure did warm the crowd up and prepared them for the first battle of the night: The dance off between Soul Mavericks, who won their last battle a fortnight ago, and challengers B-Squad.

Jump Off judges Nick Bright (Radio 1Xtra) , Darren Dixon and Adele White then gave their verdicts and the verbal judgments from the audience, it was clear that Soul Mavericks was the winner for the second time in the row and have progressed to the next round.

Preceding the dance off was a comedy sketch from Limz. Getting the attention of the audience proved difficult as many people began to drift of in pockets of conversation not paying much attention to his set which was a shame. Making ineffective jokes about how he was light skinned and got burnt in Africa did not move the crowd at all – boredom turned to mockery and the curtains slowly closed on his performance. Better luck next time Limz.

At this point the producer battle was upon us and it was time for King Kevz and and Moe Keyzz to go head to head in the combat of beat making. Each producer had 5 minutes to make a beat on the spot. Moe Keyz steppd up first and after some trial and error, Moe came up with a beat with 1 minute to spare and just causally walked off the stage. Now the spotlight was on King Kevz , after winning three previous battles he was the obvious favourite to win this battle. After a few off beat moments, Kevz just managed to finish his beat. For the audience and judges this was a tough one but after much debate, Moe came out on top.

The second to last battle of the night was the MC battle which had a few battlers involved – Midi, sites, Infecta and Seano Mac who is the current champ. The battle was more entertainment than anything else. When Infecta came up against Midi he didnt want to clash him which was bizarre. The crowd at this point went cold on the battlers and the judges expressed their discontent of the segment. Seano Mac’s title was not challenged.

Finally the booty shaking battle beckoned on us and the female contestants involved was mouth watering beautiful with their booty clapping, which persuaded the ‘balling’ males in the crowd to throw bank notes which accumulated to £300. The money was split between the two ladies that remained as they shaked a little extra for the crowd.

To wrap up to what was a wonderful night, Choice FM radio host and comedian Kojo announced on the night that Jade from the Jump Off camp is to become his new co-host on his breakfast show.

The night overall was great experience and for those who are engrossed in the Hip-Hop culture, I would advise you to attend.

The next battle is May 14. There are only 8 rounds left till the finals which is on August 13.
