Damilola Taylor’s Father Richard Taylor: ‘Knife crime must stop!’

Last night at the ‘British Academy Television Awards’, Richard Taylor, father of Damilola Taylor collected his prize for ‘Best Single Drama’ for ‘Damilola Our Loved Boy’.

Damilola ‘Our Loved Boy’, was a featured length drama about the sad and cruel killing of 10 year old Damilola Taylor, Damilola was killed in his hometown Peckham 17 years ago in 2000. After a lengthy trial several boys were cleared on murder but later two brothers were found guilty of manslaughter.

The heart wrenching drama shows us what happened behind closed doors with his family, the media and the authorities. His family fort for justice and embarked on a gruelling path to find it, this drama explores everything from his journey from Lagos to London up to his death and beyond. Told from the point of view of Damilola’s father, Richard Taylor, making it extremely intimidate and very deeply moving.

Last night Richard begged for an end to the fatal stabbing in London’s streets. His emotional acceptance came just hours after an 18 year old man died in Enfield after suffering severe stab wounds. Officials said he was the 10th teenager to have been killed in the capital in 2017.

Damilola’s brother Tunde and the production team, said: “I want to dedicate this to the memory of Damilola Taylor and Gloria, my late wife, and first and foremost send a strong appeal to young people on the street killing themselves. Parents are crying, others are crying, the surge of killing has gone up in the city of London, I beg you all to stop this unnecessary killing of innocent people. Young people, spread the message”.

More and more schools in London are fighting for metal detectors, this has become a serious concern as police are seizing hundreds of knives from schools across the UK, mainly being London. Richard Taylor lost his 10 year old boy, his message was very powerful and if the younger generation would sit and listen, maybe one more young person would be safe on our streets of London.
